Overview: Welcome to Visual Art! Inside our shared art studio, you will be free to express yourself and your creativity through the projects we create. In the art studio, your ideas and feelings matter. Please be ready to use your imagination, try new things, and have fun! In this course, we will explore drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, 3D-design, and more. In addition to material exploration, we will dive into art history, investigating why humans from all over the world make art, what art communicates to us, and how art makes us feel and think. 


Materials you need for this course: 

  • Sketchbook: This will be provided to you! You must bring your sketchbook to art class every day.
  • Pencil and eraser: Please be ready each day with a pencil and eraser. No pens, please!
 

Expectations:

  • Be on time: Our lessons begin when class starts, and you will miss important information if you are late.
  • No food, gum, or drinks (except water): The art studio can be a messy space, and we don’t want to add food crumbs, sticky gum, and drinks to that! 
  • No cellphones during class time: Artists need focus to work, and cellphones are a distraction to yourself and others. There will be times when you will need your laptop, so please be sure it is charged and ready in case you are asked to use it!
  • Respect each other: We celebrate each other’s differences in the art studio and respect each other’s ideas and artwork. 
  • Respect the space: The art studio is an exciting space that can get busy and messy. Respect the space around you and the space around your classmates while you work. Leave the art studio as you found it at the end of each class – it should be clear of things on the desks, on the floor, and in the sink area!
  • Be open to trying new things: Some techniques, materials, and projects will be new to you, and it can be scary to try something you’ve never done before. There’s no such thing as “right” or “wrong” when it comes to art – you just need to give things a try!
  • Daily Participation: You are expected to participate in our daily lessons and create artwork. Your participation might look different on different days. You might answer a question, speak with your classmates, or work quietly on artwork.
  • Peer Critiques: Many of our projects will include peer critiques where you will present your artwork in a gallery walk. You will share your artwork with classmates and have a group conversation about each other’s work. Peer critiques will happen sometimes while you are still working on a project and sometimes after a project is finished.  
  • Self-Assessments (rubrics, artist statements, reflections): You will be asked to reflect upon your artwork, artistic concepts, and the process of making. 
  • Images Uploaded into Google Classroom: You will be required to upload high-quality images of each finished artwork you create in this course. At the end of the year, you will compile the images into a final Digital Portfolio. 


Assessments: 

  • QSI is a mastery based school and as such student progress is measured using a mastery scale.
  • Assessments are designed to provide evidence of standards. 
  • Assessments are scored using 1-4 for each relevant standard separately.
